Read more →Hello! I'm Jakob Leon Pajeken, an International Master and dedicated chess coach, currently rated FIDE with two GM norms.

Chess has been a part of my life since I was five years old – and over the years, it has grown from a childhood passion into both my profession and my way of life.
I discovered chess through my father, FM Wolfgang Pajeken, who introduced me to the game at an early age and played an important role in shaping my development as a chess player.
Since then, I have built my own path in chess, with more than 30 tournament victories and countless experiences both at the board and as a coach. While I am proud of what I have achieved so far, my own chess journey is far from over. I continue to work every day on improving my game and taking the next steps in my development.
As a passionate tournament player and chess trainer, I enjoy looking at the game from both perspectives: the challenge of competing at the board and the process of understanding, explaining and improving chess. On this website, I share my chess journey, experiences and thoughts about the game, while also offering individual chess lessons and training games in both English and German.
Whether you're interested in chess coaching, have a media, tournament, or event inquiry, or just want to say hello — send a message and I'll get back to you.
More than just a coach — a partner for chess success.
The foundation of my coaching is 1-on-1 online training. Together, we analyze your games, identify your mistakes, and dig into the underlying causes behind them. We also work through carefully selected exercises and train your thinking process along the way. As an active International Master still working toward the Grandmaster title myself, I know firsthand what separates surface-level fixes from real understanding.
The goal isn't just to spot mistakes or find better moves, but to understand why your mistakes happen and work specifically on the weaknesses behind them.
Your opening repertoire is chosen specifically for your style and level — not pulled from a generic video course. Carefully selected and taught so that you repeatedly encounter the same plans, patterns, and types of positions — helping you develop a genuine understanding of your variations, all the way into the middlegame and, in many cases, the endgame.
One coaching session with me each week on its own is never enough to make lasting progress. That's why I give you clear guidance and concrete tasks to work on between our sessions.
This includes targeted homework, carefully chosen book and tournament recommendations, as well as psychological tips and practical advice for tournament preparation, competition, and handling difficult situations at the board.
That way, you always know what to work on, why it matters, and how to make the most of your time outside our sessions. Because my goal isn't just to make you better during our sessions — it's to teach you how to keep improving on your own.
Want to test yourself against a -rated FIDE International Master in a real game setting? Alongside my regular coaching, I also offer individual training games and matches — open to anyone, whether you already work with me or not.
Play a single game or a series of games against me, with the opportunity to practice your openings, test specific variations, and gain practical experience. After the game, I can also give you a brief insight into my thought process and explain what I was considering at key moments.
A simple process, from first contact to your first block of sessions.
Send me a short introduction of yourself: your age, your current chess level, your chess goals, and what chess means to you.
We look at a few of your recent games together, so I can identify real patterns, not just the last mistake you noticed. And we'll discuss the next steps together — including pricing, which depends on your goals and how we work together.
Book now →Based on that, I set out where the training will focus first — openings, calculation, endgames, or how you train between sessions.
Weekly (or more frequent) lessons, each followed by specific homework and exercises for the days in between.
We revisit the plan regularly and adjust it as your games change — training should follow your actual progress, not a fixed script.
The experiences of people who took the next step.
Send me a message about your chess background and what you're working towards — I'll get back to you with a suggestion for how to start.
